History of Belly Dance
Belly Dance is an enchanting dance style; the oldest dance form in the world. The art of Belly Dance can be traced back to ancient times as a fertility dance. The dance , which is actually called Oriental dance in the middle east, can be dated back to the gypsies who travelled from India along the silk route, through Persia , Turkey, Syria, Egypt and Northern Africa.
The belly dance style which we know today, "rakkas" in Turkish, was performed for the sultanas and sultans in the Turkish Ottoman Empire.
The dance form was seen in Paris in the late 1800s at world fairs and cabarets. My great grandmother was one of the belly dancers performing in Paris (pictured below photo circa 1905). The dance, now called belly dance, is in fact a dance using mostly the hips.
The hips give life; this is the dance of life!
I hold IDTA certification in teaching belly dance.
